It felt a little Hollywoodish when (view spoiler) Hard to top that for the final fight. It was a little surprising to me to find it in such an action oriented book, but at least is remained secondary and didn't dominate Owen's thoughts or the storyline. The secondary romantic plot was unsurprising in development or resolution. ![]() Correia does a good job of making the ultimate evil frightening, especially when using Owen's psychic connection to give insight into C.O.'s megalomania. The overall plot involves confronting one of the ultimate evils that abound, and while there isn't much mystery surrounding the final confrontation, there were a few twists along the way that had me surprised. It was also nice in the way his voice engaged me into Owen's point of view the introduction to the world of monsters, the love of guns and his growing competency in fighting monsters. A Twilight reference made me laugh but may end up dating the book. Flashes of humor and modern references kept the voice fresh, making me feel like although he took situations seriously, he also saw the humorous side. ![]() As such, his language is straightforward, but not so simplistic that I was bored. Several combat instances begin with a set-up, where enemies remain neutral unless fired upon or by entering a restricted area. One ability allows a severely damaged player to transmute blood into an enemy, swapping their health points entirely, while another forces a character to shriek, inflicting panic onto enemies within the area of impact. However, an interesting mechanic allows the player to move towards an interactable table or wooden cellar that transforms into cover.īattles are violent and often unpredictable when ability cards come into play. Unfortunately, I was consistently struggling with the controller to pick the intended block of cover – an issue that doesn’t translate over to the PC version, and one that permeates amongst similar console ports in the genre. Cover is displayed in the form of a shield, but bullets can penetrate cover, dealing minimal damage. The combat works almost identically to the grid system of XCOM, where the player moves a character to a point on the spaces provided based off of the amount of action points granted in that turn. The ability cards equipped cannot be used freely at any time, as they require a higher amount of luck to trigger and a brief cooldown before reuse. Hard West incorporates this luck system that depletes when a shot misses you and increases when hit. Though mechanically similar to XCOM, Hard West offered a refreshing change of setting. On the harder difficulties, enemy aim and precision is understandably increased, but I felt myself craving more of a challenge. There would be moments where the enemy took advantage of verticality and fired at me from the top floor of a building, only to then run downstairs and into the middle of the field on their next turn. The AI is competent most of the time, but I found myself questioning their decisions on normal difficulty. These ability cards sometimes turn the tides of battle completely, often affecting more than one enemy when it becomes overwhelming. Each weapon and consumable come with their own luck, sight and damage statistic, while ability cards can be split between characters. Before launching combat, the player is taken to a menu to prepare their characters for battle by equipping consumables, weapons and ability cards all allocated in a few inventory spots. That’s not to say that the game is devoid of any kind of challenge or strategy. Hard West simplifies the brutal gameplay of XCOM, and proves to be more favorable with critical shots. Hard West’s UI is a bit muddled and overwhelming in the beginning when trying to learn and understand its core mechanics, but after that initial hurdle it proves to be a rather lenient experience. Ironman, similar to Halo’s iron skull that reverts players back to their last checkpoint after death, forces you to restart the scenario if a critical character is killed. The former debuffs damaged characters, but strengthens them over the course of the scenario. Within each difficulty setting, the player has the opportunity to choose different optional modes – combat injuries and ironman. ![]() I found the tabletop, exploration portions of the game to be the most enjoyable.īefore starting any scenario, there are three difficulty options in the form of easy, normal and hard. Yet there are some issues that persist throughout. The motivations to engage in combat are justified, and serve as a nice diversion from the exploration portion of the game. Hard West’s risk reward system shines in these situations, as it encourages the player to make difficult decisions. After narrowly escaping death, I had made it to the church where the minister healed me of my ailments and performed an exorcism on my father for a meager price. ![]() My choices in this particular scenario left me severely injured as I slipped and fell to the bottom, and would ultimately affect my performance and vulnerability in combat. ![]() Once at the well, I was given the option to throw one of my own down into it in an attempt to strip my father of his curse, or climb down to snag the other coins at the bottom. The townsfolk pointed me in the direction of a wishing well that appeared after the fact. Before exploring the church’s scenario, I traveled to a Mexican town where I asked for information about a cure in exchange for some coin. The father, struck with a malignant curse, seeks aid from a minister held up in a church somewhere on the map. As you search for your wife’s killers, you build a homestead and venture out into the wasteland excavating gold, earning coins, and discovering new locations solely dependent on your choices within dialogue. At one point during the first scenario of the campaign, a family travels through the Oregon trail, only for the mother to be captured and decapitated. 3/9/2023 0 Comments Goodtimes com![]() ![]() The first Kids Klassics videos were 52 different cartoons, which were all meant to be in color and received a 50-50 joint venture with Remco to market the Mel-O-Toons cartoons by Storer Broadcasting. At the Summer CES 1985, GoodTimes launched a home video label Kids Klassics Home Video, which was specifically designed for a children's audience. Despite these changes, however, GoodTimes continued to produce animated films based on public domain "knockoff" titles. As a result of this lawsuit, GoodTimes was required by law to print its name atop all of its future VHS covers, in order to clearly demonstrate to the public at large that this was not the " blockbuster" title that they would be purchasing. The Walt Disney Company sued GoodTimes in 1993 because the videotape packaging closely resembled Disney's, allegedly creating the potential of confusing consumers into unintentionally purchasing a GoodTimes title, when they instead meant to purchase a film from Disney. This was largely legal, as the stories of the big-budget films were based on folk tales that had long been in the public domain, and the major studios had little room to claim exclusive rights to the stories or the main characters. Many of its home-video titles-such as Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Pinocchio, Sinbad, The Little Mermaid, The Three Musketeers and Thumbelina-were named similarly or identically to big-budget animated films from other studios (though their plots were sometimes very different), and GoodTimes would often release these films close to the theatrical/home-video releases of other studios. Though the company also produced and distributed many low-priced fitness videos, its most recognized line of products were the series of low-budget traditionally animated films from companies such as Jetlag Productions, Golden Films, and Blye Migicovsky Productions, as well as a selection of the works of Burbank Films Australia. GoodTimes began with the distribution of copies of public domain titles. The company had a distribution facility in Jersey City, New Jersey and a duplication facility in Bayonne, New Jersey. Its headquarters were in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. The founders for the company were the brothers Kenneth, Joseph and Stanley Cayre (often referred to and credited simply as the "Cayre Brothers") of Salsoul Records. Though it produced its own titles, the company was well known due to its distribution of media from third parties and classics. ![]() was an American home video company that originated in 1984 under the name of GoodTimes Home Video. 3/9/2023 0 Comments The long road home movieThis miniseries is absolute rehashed junk. In Long Road Home, the word "War" was inserted to replace, "killing". (From Saving Pvt Ryan) What's a good fire fight scene without the soldier who recites scripture before squeezing off a round? During the 49 minutes of episode #3, I found at least four instances of material purloined from other war movies. She's snatched the crown away from Oliver Stone. This time Martha Radditz does her dissing of our American military by portraying them as demoralized, bumbling idiots (Where oh where are my flares? I must have dropped them!). It's just another war movie with a not-so-subtle liberal slant that's flavored with a good healthy helping of righteous shame. Today I watched episode #3 of The Long Road Home. Overall, a good series, just dont give up in the first few episodes it gets a whole lot better. Makes the effects of war very realistic and stark. The final episode is very poignant, with a great emotionally-manipulative twist. the action got grittier, more intense and more compelling. These all lifted the engagement level significantly. The dialogue and interactions became more plausible. The soldiers backstories went from mundane meet-the-family stuff to interesting series of events, linking in with their current situation and revealing their characters. However, from a point, the series clicked into gear. Movie rating: 7.4 / 10 ( 3100 ) Season: 1 - unclassified episodes Directed by: Mikko Alanne Writer credits: Mikko Alanne Cast: E.J. Movie details American forces occupying Iraq are ambushed in a Baghdad neighborhood. The first 2-3 episodes were all like this, to the point where I was thinking of giving up on the series. The unit brotherhood also seemed quite artificial, with forced, unnatural-feeling dialogue and interactions. Scenes showing soldiers with their family seemed token, padded and superficially sentimental. However, the series immediately failed on the engagement front. based on a true military story, follow a unit and are engaged by the camaraderie, gritty action scenes. Second, the crunch and hi-gain tones may sound slightly flat when compared to a tube amp (including picking dynamics), but they, too, are very clear. First, the clean guitar tones are superb and with utter clarity. I would not compare the tones to live tube-amps, and high-end gear like the Axe-Fx and Kemper would give Guitar Rig a run for its money, but there are some definite strengths that should not be ignored. I believe the above is widely accepted, based on forum discussions and comments, whereas the true test of the program comes from the amp and cab quality. Further, there are so many options in what effects to choose, how to stack them, how to route them (e.g., you can apply amps, cabs and effects to certain frequencies only) that there is something for everyone and, at the same time, it's somewhat overwhelming, like a child in a candy store not knowing what to choose. ![]() In essence, even if you do not care for any of the guitar amp/cab tones, Guitar Rig is worth the investment just to have the limitless rack of effects, tools and routing options. ![]() In other word, yes, you can have a basic and classic sounding reverb, but if you want one that is beautifully and authentically strange, then you're in for a treat. ![]() Many companies produce quality delays, reverbs, modulations, etc., but I place Guitar Rig up there with Eventide - pristine, clear and great sounding, but with dozens of presets that are absolutely unique and stunning. Now, Guitar Rig's strongest attribute are the effects. When you have a preset selected, presuming you're not building from scratch), you can make any number of desired choices, such as changes in the amp or cab, what delay you're using (as well as a number of created presets for any delay or other effects, if not customizing differently), along with various tool for routing, e.g., you can have two different rigs that work in parallel that then converse into one tone. For instance, you can select presets that emphasize a genre of music (e.g., metal, rock, country, pop, ambient), an FX concept (lots of delay or modulation) and even artist-created tones. First, you select the instrument (e.g., guitar, bass, keys, etc.), which gives presets that are most useful for that instrument, and from there you have other categories to narrow your choice. General choices can be based on a number of factors, with over 1,000 presets from which to choose (edit and build your own as desired). In a DAW, you simply drag and drop the program into the FX bin of an audio track, and you're ready to go. It downloads/loads very easily via Native Access (a general platform program free for download), and the number of times I used it (either stand-alone or in a DAW) it worked without any glitches. I'll get to that soon, but to provide a general description, Guitar Rig 6 is a stand-alone program (you can connect a computer/laptop to a speaker system and jam away) or within a DAW for recording. What I can say about version 6, relative to using hardware (including tube amps) is that it sounds pretty darn good in a number of ways. Based on internet feedback, it seems Guitar Rig showed promise, but fell to the wayside as other VST and modelers came on board over the past few years. I have used other VST plug-ins, although I found them a bit sterile sounding. Guitar Rig, by Native Instruments, has been around for some time, although I have not used the program in previous versions. ![]() express is a unique desktop application that offers the solution under one roof, follow the instructions to setup Garmin express.
